The big idea
On the ocean world of Vell, every landing depended on the Cartographers' Guild and their coastal charts. The Guild was paid by the kilometre of coastline mapped, so their charts grew huge and beautiful — every ripple drawn, every rock named, one bay filling an entire wall. Pilots quietly stopped trusting them; there was too much to check, and it was easy to miss the one reef that actually mattered. A junior surveyor named Isa broke from the norm and turned in a chart the size of her palm: just the safe channel, and the rock that kills. The Guild marked her down for it. Two nights later a storm hit. Every pilot flying the huge, detailed charts ran aground. The one flying Isa's plain little map came in clean.
Why it matters
The Guild was paid for kilometres charted, not ships landed safely — so the charts kept growing more detailed, because that's what got rewarded, not because it helped anyone land a shuttle. This is Goodhart's law in miniature: when a measure becomes the target, people optimise the measure instead of the goal it was supposed to stand for. The charts got more beautiful and less useful at the same time, and nobody noticed until the storm made the gap impossible to ignore.
Use it today
Name one number you're currently chasing — a grade, a follower count, hours logged, tasks closed. Ask plainly: what was this number originally supposed to stand in for? If the number keeps climbing while the real thing it was meant to track isn't improving, that's the moment to stop and re-aim at the actual goal, not the score.

Same pattern both times: the number goes up, and the real goal it was supposed to represent quietly falls behind.
