Science doesn't grow by neatly stacking one fact on another. Kuhn argued it mostly runs as 'normal science' — puzzle-solving inside a shared framework he called a paradigm — until anomalies pile up, a crisis hits, and the framework gets replaced wholesale. Progress comes in ruptures, not a smooth climb.
Why it matters
This is the book that coined 'paradigm shift', and almost everyone uses the phrase wrong — a new app feature is not a paradigm shift. Kuhn's sharper point: defenders of the old framework aren't stupid or blind. The same data looks genuinely different depending on the paradigm you hold, which is why the old guard often never converts — as Max Planck put it, a new truth tends to win not by persuading its opponents but because the opponents eventually die.

Next time you're talking past someone, pause and ask: are we disagreeing about facts, or holding different frameworks that make the same facts mean different things? A framework fight can't be won with data alone — you have to surface the frame first.
