A Primer

When something keeps overshooting and correcting and overshooting again, the culprit usually isn't bad judgment. It's a delay. Feedback that arrives late makes even a careful person overcorrect, every time.

Meadows — the MIT researcher who led the team behind The Limits to Growth — builds a small model of a car dealership to show it. The dealer wants ten days of inventory on the lot. Sales tick up, so he orders more. But it takes a few days to be sure the trend is real, and a few weeks for the factory to deliver. By the time the cars arrive he's ordered too many, so he cuts hard, and a month later he's short again. Nobody in the story is stupid. The oscillation is baked into the wiring, not the person. That's the spine of the whole book: systems largely produce their own behavior, which is why swapping out whoever is at the controls so often changes nothing at all. She was writing this as a primer when she died in 2001; it was assembled and published in 2008.

Pick something you've been adjusting over and over — your sleep schedule, a workout plan, a price, how often you check in on someone. Ask how long that thing actually takes to respond. Then wait one full cycle before touching it again. Most of the thrash in a week is us reacting to a signal we already responded to.

In real lifeThe shower in an old building is the cheapest demonstration there is: the hot water takes fifteen seconds to arrive, you crank the tap, and you spend the next two minutes swinging between scalding and freezing. Same shape as the gym — someone trains hard for eight days, sees nothing on the scale, and switches programs, right before the first program would have started working. Or the manager who asks for a status update every morning on a task that only moves once a week, and gets a week's worth of anxiety for no new information. In each case the person is paying attention. They're just responding faster than the system can answer.
