Thinking, Fast and Slow
The big idea
You have two thinking systems, and the one running the show most of the time is the fast, lazy one. System 1 is automatic, instant, confident. System 2 is deliberate, slow, accurate — but also tired, distracted, and easily overridden.
Why it matters
Kahneman won the Nobel Prize in Economics for mapping the exact ways System 1 leads us astray. A quick demo: ask someone 17 × 24 and System 2 has to take over — you actually feel the effort. Ask whether a stranger looks trustworthy, and System 1 answers before you've chosen to engage. The errors have names. Anchoring: the first number you hear pulls your estimate toward it, even when it's irrelevant. Availability: you rate something as common if examples come to mind easily — plane crashes feel more likely than car crashes because they get more coverage. And WYSIATI — "What You See Is All There Is" — you form a confident story from whatever's in front of you, with no real awareness of what's missing. System 1 doesn't know what it doesn't know.
Use it today
When a strong opinion arrives quickly — about a person, a risk, a decision — ask whether System 2 actually weighed in, or whether System 1 already decided and your slow thinking is just working backwards to defend it. The tell is that the verdict arrived instantly and feels completely obvious.
