Work that answers to a physical thing gives you feedback you can't argue with. The bike either starts or it doesn't. A lot of modern white-collar work has no such moment — so it fills the gap with performance, and people quietly lose track of whether they're any good.
Why it matters
Crawford has a philosophy PhD from Chicago and ran a think tank in Washington for about five months before quitting to open a motorcycle repair shop in Richmond. Before that he'd had a job writing abstracts of academic papers, where the quota crept up to twenty-eight a day — a rate at which, as he puts it, you're no longer really reading the article, just producing something that looks like having read it. That's his indictment: not that offices are boring, but that they let you fake it indefinitely. The mechanic can't. He also notes that American high schools started stripping out shop class in the 1990s, on the theory that the future was all knowledge work — and argues that trades demand more actual thinking than the people who made that call assumed. Diagnosing an intermittent electrical fault is closer to detective work than to following a manual.
