The big idea
When you push a door that was meant to be pulled, that's not you being dumb — it's the design failing you. Norman's whole argument: good design makes the right action obvious, and bad design makes you blame yourself for its faults.
Why it matters
There's a reason confusing doors are literally called 'Norman doors' now — a flat plate says push, a handle says pull, and when a designer puts a handle on a door you're supposed to push, your hand obeys the handle every time. Norman calls these cues affordances and signifiers: a good object tells you how to use it just by looking at it, no label, no instructions. His sharpest point is about self-blame. People apologize to machines. They feel stupid when the microwave has thirty buttons and they can't reheat coffee. Norman says flip it — if a smart person can't figure out a door, the door is broken, not the person.

Next time something frustrates you — an app, an appliance, a form that keeps rejecting your input — stop and notice your instinct to think 'I'm bad at this.' Then ask the better question: what did this thing fail to make obvious? Nine times out of ten the fault is in the design, not in you.

A visitor pushes on a glass office door that only slides, because a flat vertical bar quietly says 'push here.' Someone stares at a colleague's TV remote with forty identical grey buttons and can't find volume, then feels foolish — when the real problem is that nothing on it stands out. In each case the object had a job to signal how it works, and it didn't.
